Writing about any serious topic you are familiar with is perhaps easy, but adding humor to it is very difficult and sometimes even dangerous if you take too many liberties. I am aware that many of you are starting school, college or going back at some point. I have experience in this area so that’s what I will be talking about. I will delve in to aspects of social dynamics, the smallest things add up to create the whole package. How did I go from ultra-shy to super-confident?

Well, I will tell you a little bit about myself so you can get a clearer understanding. My mum and dad are married; I have no brothers or sisters. As a child I was shy, I would just smile – I remember staying over at my cousins and they would jokingly call me something along the lines of smiley boy. I saw other people my age and it was like they had something I didn’t. I could throw out any kind of excuse or rationalisation to why someone was confident but I wasn’t — but I still wanted this so I ultimately knew it was up to me to bring my true self out. My confidence grew over time.

First impressions are hugely important. If you know what you’re dealing with before you go into the environment you can have an advantage and it allows others to connect with you super fast. If you put your personality on the line instantly, you have all this knowledge and you can be comfortable before you even see the other people. Quiet people are scarier than loud people. I don’t want people to confuse confidence with arrogance either.

I purposely keep, yes KEEP my body language: relaxed, cool, calm, confident when I walk in to that room full of newbies, because I’m not TURNING into a cool guy when I walk in, I already am. I’m checking out the hotties on the way, being social to people I encounter. Ask someone for the time, ask someone if they’re starting college and ask people how they are doing. This creates a feeling of validation and then you go on to do more daring stuff you wouldn’t usually do because you have a sense of what you’re allowed to do.

Address the authority of the room taking names. Find a comfortable seat where you can kick back and be aware of everything that’s going on. People who know you will usually sit away from others they don’t know. Even if you know someone and you both don’t really like each other, it’s my guess that you will probably sit near each other. It’s even better if you can walk in (GO FIRST!) with people who know you, you have that assumed cool guy value and it can help to make you feel like you have more permission to act cooler (even though you give yourself your own permission anytime or place).

Ever sat in a group and you’re facing the wall, behind you is moving people traffic? You feel somewhat restricted/uncomfortable. That’s like what I’m saying. I feel the physical position you are in plays a big part, but if you happen to not be in a good position then don’t let it be an excuse.

Anyway, I have a sense of “YEAH, THIS IS ME. I MAKE NO APOLOGIES FOR WHO I AM.”

When you walk in, people will judge you no matter what – Consciously or unconsciously. You walk in wearing “CHAV” clothes then it can easily give people a reason (EXCUSE) to stay away from you. Same with any other group really.

I’m also excited… Because I chose to be. You might feel your heart pounding, the rush of adrenaline can be labelled several things.. Some people call it nervousness, I just know that I feel ‘excited’ because being excited is more useful to me than being nervous. I’ve fucked up enough in the past to know that being nervous is detrimental!

I can feel this ALIVENESS or FREEDOM in my chest so when I speak it projects in a certain way. If you shout across the class (you can calibrate to get away with it.. depends on teacher also) you will notice all eyes on you. You’re displaying your personality. I only really shout across the class to someone I know cos it might be uncomfortable for a stranger.

The teacher was laying down the rules, she mentioned that we can’t use headphones to listen to music (the previous years – you could).. Then I said “What about speakers?”, with a smirk on my face.. It got people laughing.. She said “No you cant use speakers” but could visibly see she was amused.. That doesn’t matter, I was amusing myself and I think it probably made others feel more comfortable.

Saying this, don’t constantly try and outwit the teachers, too much of it will make you predictable and people will get sick of it. When you get a sense of peoples’ states and boundaries you know how far you can go.

Don’t be afraid of showing interest in people. Just don’t come off as try hard, asking too many questions. Just be cool and they’ll be cool. The newbs are probably self-conscious so they’ll want to make a good impression themselves.

At my college they get you to do team building exercises so you can all get to know each other. Don’t be afraid to be the leader, you’re a leader anyway but it doesn’t matter if you aren’t, just act like one. A thing I noticed is they might give things out.. We had balloons (we were making some thing which had to hold loads of heavy books on). My friend who demonstrates these leader qualities made me realise this.. He was blowing up the balloons, our groups attention was on him. The balloon ended up blowing up in mid air.. Our book balancing thing was crap but we had fun. Don’t be a control freak but take initiative – leaders give other people control but will still take action when needed – if you fuck up, it’s fine… Laugh about it.

Be in the NOW. All your attention should be in the present moment — We have a tutor who talks A LOT and being in the now is a challenge, he asked me a question about something.. I couldn’t answer because I wasn’t focusing on the present, I didn’t know what he said. Keep good eye contact with the teacher, so they can SEE you’re listening and absorb what they’re actually saying.

Social value is one of the major things here, when you have a group (even a small group) that is “the party”… You can see people wanting to be in with it. They’re looking at you because they wanna get in. They laugh at the shit you do. Advertise your sense of humour, your confidence etc. Speaking loudly, clearly, emphasize key words. Neutral and breaking rapport mode of voice is what you should be using. Only use supplication voice when you’re exaggerating it for fun.

How would you act as if everyone in the room is 11 years old? Bust everyones balls, have that carefree attitude but still know when to apologise if you cross the line. Don’t prove or justify yourself to them.
